The “Napoleon Complex” is a domineering behavior of overcompensation often used to describe men of lower stature. In the de la Torre brothers’ additive bust of Napoleon Bonaparte, for whom the supposed condition is named, the French emperor's disgruntled portrait is encased with gold chains, coins, and pearls, among other chosen objects. Displayed upon a silver platter, the bust creates a multi-layered critique of wealth, ego, and power.
