Cecilia Biagini: Far Edge
Ruiz-Healy Art is please to present Far Edge, an exhibit of paintings, photographs and relief sculpture by Cecilia Biagini, who lives and works in Brooklyn, N.Y., the second solo show at the gallery. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, she studied with another well-known Argentinian abstract artist, Guillermo Kuitca. Like him, Biagini references architecture in her work, something that becomes more apparent in more structured works such as Singular, a companion piece of sorts to Plural, in which the geometric shapes cohere into a more solid form.
Biagini also references math and science. Propelled Desire, a sculpture made out of shims — thin wooden wedges the artist paints individually, then screws together in stacks of four — calls to mind the noodle-soft 'X' of a chromosome. All of the sculpture in the show is made out of small pieces of wood, painted or coated with gold or silver leaf and configured in abstract shapes and patterns. These pieces are “100 percent New York,” Biagini says. “The display of the city and the bridges as well as the easy access to materials” lead her to three-dimensional work.
A catalogue with an essay by Adrian Geraldo Saldaña accompanies the exhibition.
"Cecilia Biagini follows a line of geometric abstractionists coming out of Latin America, though far from producing calculated or stringent works, she draws out the heat and the light of complex systems moving (imperceptibly) all around us. Her uses of symbology and language not only introduce the ephemeral into geometry, they give us endless invention and examination. A quiet and enduring revolution in the name of space and time."
